Summary

Working on the SL55 gave me exposure to the complexity of a high-performance vehicle, including hydraulic-system service, engine sealing work, tight packaging, and the engineering required to make a powerful luxury car behave as one system.

The work

Hydraulic hose replacement and a full system flush, plus valve cover gaskets.

What the car taught

This was the first time I worked on something engineered and machined to a genuinely high standard, and the difference is visible everywhere — tolerances, fastener quality, how components are located and serviced. It gave me a reference point for what high-performance engineering actually looks like up close, rather than as a specification sheet.

The hydraulic system in particular is unlike anything on an ordinary car, and servicing it meant understanding a pressurised circuit as a system rather than as a set of parts.
